The South Carolina Militia under the command of Colonel William Moultrie repulsed a British naval attack from Fort Sullivan in Charleston Harbor on June 28, 1776. Many historians agree that this was one of the most decisive battles of the Revolution. The fort was later renamed Fort Moultrie in the Colonel's honor.
