New Twist On Old Tradition

A nonprofit organization has developed a new way to lengthen the life span of traditional American flags.

Stars for Our Troops not only retires worn and faded US flags but they transform them into something unique. After retiring, they remove the fields of blue called the canton, wash it, and cut the stars in a pentagon shape.

A star and an explanation are placed inside a plastic bag:

"I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not Forgotten."

They would prefer flags that are 5 feet by 3 feet. The stars should be no larger than 2 inches squares.
