On the flag of Minnesota the State Seal is shown on a deep blue field. On the seal is a farmer watching an Indian on horseback riding westwards, refers to forcing Native Americans westward. The nineteen stars represent the nineteenth State, after the original thirteen, to be admitted to the Union. They arranged these stars around the seal to form a larger star symbolizing Minnesota as the "Star of the North," as is expressed by the words L' Etoile du Nord.
